Changed from americast to BHN this week just for HD. Hooked up the barco 1208 thru a transcoder and watched my first true HD. Must say I was not that impressed. Previously I ran the 1208 with a qd line doubler an I think the image was as good as HD. Tried my barco 28 inch monitor and transcoder, about the same. Non HD chanels are better on BHN than americast.Anyone else experience this? :)

Be careful. Make sure you are watching something shot in HD. Go to TitanTV.com to see the schedules. You may have been watching upconverted 480i broadcast as 720p or 1080i and you would not be overly impressed.

What is the input rate for the barco? Can it handle 720p? What output rate is your BHN box?

the barco has a hz scan rate max of 135 mhz, rgb bandwith of 120mhz, projecting on a 120x90 inch screen. pace box set to 1080. the first movie was on hbohd called wind talkers.

That would work, sounds nice. You could try it on 720p if your Barco accepts it. Just as a comparison.

I know my single tub HD set shows a big difference in quality. Maybe your line doubler was doing such a good job you don;t see as much of a difference, but I doubt it. How's the focus and convergence?

Can you accept DVI to compare?

can't accept dvi, one of the barcos drawback is that it only accepts s-video or RGBHV. Problem may be in the transcoder, using key digital have another brand I will try tonight. also will try 720p. thanks

Also Video is a much better comparison than Film. Wait till monday and do watch Monday Night football on Channel 628. You can do a nice side by side comparison with the regular ABC channel.

Exactly right bdraw.....the hd movies on hbo only look marginally better than progressive dvd because they were shot on film and then converted to hd...the original source just can't capture the detail that a hd video camera can and will not get any sharper simply by converting it to a hd format, the movie would have to have been shot using hd video cameras....

Video based hd is unbelievable though.....try discovery hd...that has the best looking hd I've seen....A show called "Insectia" imparticular...the close up shots in that program made my jaw drop the first time I saw it.

Something is definately wrong if HD looks only marginally better than SD. On my set it looks tremendously better. There is absolutely no comparison. I am currently watching the Georgia/LSU game on CBS. Incredible video! They had a few problems with the Dolby Digital but got it ironed out in the first quarter. It was sort of comical. Right after they put up a 5.1 digital logo, they lost the center channel. All you could hear for a while was the background noise and sound effects.

that game is video based hd...it will most deffinantly look much better than sd.

I was refering to movies that are shot on film and later converted to 1080i...it doesn't look as good as video shot with a hd camera and I have even noticed that the quality varies from movie to movie...especially when they convert older movies...I have seen a few older movies converted to hd that actually looked worse than a progressive dvd of the same movie.

Newer converted movies look a little sharper and have more natural looking colors compared to DVD but it isn't such a huge improvement that I feel like I'm missing something by watching it on dvd.

Candy76man,

I was replying to Tkelly. I agree 100% with you. Movies vary tremendously in quality. Some are really grainly, others are really soft. You can't beat live HD live video.
