While watching LCS I notice a pop-up appear that asks a question and allows you to answer it using the a,b, or c buttons on the remote control. I never seen this before, is this something new the networks are starting?

Baynews 9 had a poll tonight on the news. The reporter asked a question and gave three choices. To vote, the reported instructed the viewer to select the a, b, or c button. They did mention that this only worked if you have a digital cable box.

Yes this is a new feature BHN started recently, within the last month. Last comic standing was the first show to use it.

are the results passed directly back to nbc or is it used internally at BHN?

The Last Comic Standing data is passed directly to NBC. The last few episodes (and tonight's as well, I believe) are even included into the web and phone votes.

BN9's polls obviously go directly to BN9.

This is actually the second show that's been "interactive". Bravo had another reality/competition show a few months ago by the name of "Top Chef" and some episodes of this was interactive as well. LCS is by far the largest experiment so far, obviously.

as an edit: Top Chef might have just been a "friends and family" (read: employees/testers) test.. so this could be the first
show that the general public got to see.
