Hi everyone. I recently began having sound issue from my cable box (SA 8300HD). The volume decreased and there was a low humming sound. This seems to only be an issue with watching TV through the cable box. Audio from the DVD player and XBox don't have this humming sound. On the cable box, the audio range is set to narrow and volume control to fixed. I've also tried variable with the same result. I've also used heavy cables (much like Monster Cable) for the audio feed, but that also didn't have any effect. All devices mentioned above are plugged into the same power strip (TV, cable box, DVD player & XBox). Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try teaching it the words, and then it won't have to hum!

(I know I should have resisted, but the temptation was too much!)

Sounds like your using the cable box volume and not your TV's... well actually your cable box is turning down the volume and your actual TV's volume is turned up, probably the humming your getting... Go to your TV and turn up the volume on it see if it goes away

If your cable box has a traditional power supply that used a transformer and bridge rectifier and filtering capacitors, then is it possible that the filter capacitors are not up to spec. These caps smooth out the choppy DC after it is converted from AC by the rectifiers. Along with a 60hz hum on the audio, you may see a shadow line on the video that rolls up the screen and then repeats. The shadow line may only be visible on some of the video outputs, or none at all.
If you have a digital power supply.......I don't know.

WAFlowers ... haha No worries. I'm sure I couldn't have resisted either. =)

millerman101 ... I'm actually using the volume on the TV itself. I did try setting the volume on the box to the mid way point and all the way up, but with the same effect. At the mid way point, I would have to turn up the volume on the TV, but would still get the humming sound.

Floyd ... I'm not too sure what type of power supply the SA 8300HD has internally, but the power cable is just an average cable without an in-line transformer. When the humming started, I did notice a shadow line that rolls up the screen as you described. The line isn't too noticeable, but can be seen when there is a dark image or black screen between commercials, between the shows bumpers, etc. Is this due to the circuitry starting to go bad? If this is the case, let me know and I'll take the box in for a replacement.

Thanks for everyone’s help! =)

If you have established that the cable box is producing the shadow line/hum, you might as well get a replacement, unless you own it and will have to pay for the replacement. It might be cheaper to repair the power supply on the unit.
Connect up other equipment to insure that the problem is not in the TV, since that 8300 isn't all that old, is it? Has it been in a hot place that would dry out the electrolytic caps prematurely?
