View Full Version : HD DVR Worth It?

I've read all through the thread "Official SA8300HD DVR Feedback" and noted all the different problems reported. I've been thinking for some time now about getting the HD DVR from BHN, but have not due for one to the extra cost, but more because of all the issues reported with the box / service. As someone else said, "it should just work", and having frequent problems (dropped scheduled recordings, unable to set a schedule, need to reformat, serious blocking, etc.) would annoy the hell out of me.
So, what is your opinion of the box and service? Do you find it worthwhile to have the HD DVR, even with the problems? Have most of these problems been fixed by now?
Thanks,
Jack

I agree, I love mine and am thinking of getting a 2nd SD unit for the bedroom for SD content.

I guess my question would be, what is the alternative? Nothing, SD DVR?
I could never go back to watching live TV. I haven't for over 3 years now when I got my ReplayTV.
I'm not with BHN anymore... but, the HD DVR worked well enough to use. Yes, when it first came out, it had some problems, but lately it was pretty solid. My main problem with BHN was signal quality, service and price.
So, get it... you can always return it after a month or so if you don't like it.

the biggest issue I have with it is it will randomly "lose" a scheduled recording...on my two boxes this happens maybe once every two or three months and is usually because a episode didn't record for some unknown reason and is still in the scheduled recordings list, when that happens it just stops recording any more episodes of that show.
Aside from that I have very few issues with the box anymore, its easy to use once you get used to it and I can deal with an occasional glitch.

I'm stuck with for the most part crappy DVR boxes from both Comcast and BHN. Now once Comcast offers Tivo software on their boxes I will be quite happy. Now when Verizon starts offering TV service I will go back to just good DVR boxes because for me picture quality and offerings are more important to me than the DVR. I consider a Tivo DVR great while cable company DVR boxes from BHN, Verizon and Comcast are just good. Now I would take a good DVR any day of the week before I'd get no DVR. Also a BHN HD DVR that is just good is a great addition because it can record HDTV and for the price its a steal even if its not the best box.
Also keep in mind that BHN, Comcast and Verizon DVR boxes don't do anything fancy but when it comes to just recording your shows they do a very very good job of it which again is why I would take an HD DVR from any company before I'd get nothing. Also 17 bucks a month isn't a bad price to record HD but it could be cheaper but its still worth it.
