I have sold my tivo since I am very happy w/ the HD DVR. Therefore I lost the ability to view my pics and listen to my mp3's on my tv. After looking around and doing some research I found something very tempting, Roku HD-1000. http://www.rokulabs.com/products/hd1000/index.php

I just got it last night and hooked it up. I have to say my digital pics look really good on the HDTV and my camera is only a 3MB. I am looking into the Olympus C765 (4MB) as replacement eventually. Anyhow there are some third party apps written for this box that add some cool features to it. The box runs on linux and the guys that started replay tv started this company. I got the box for $290 w/ shipping from J&R Computers but I bought a 256MB compact flash card ( to use for a swap file on the box) so total cost is more like $320.

Anyone else have one of these boxes. I am wanting to get the most I can out of this and I am interested in any tweaks. There is a 3rd party app called CinemaSix that you can stream DVD's off your pc on as well as stream files via http with something called Video Lan Client.

Any thoughts?

i just bought this from eCost:
Item Number: 2213110
Description: Digital Media Receiver ( Connect your PC to any TV or Stereo
via Ethernet ) ** QTY LIMITED ** Provides an Ethernet connection from
your PC to your stereo and TV. Enjoy all your PC-Stored MP3 music files
and Digital Images on your TV or Stereo Receiver. ( hp Refurbished Model

i know its not the same as your $300 box, but thats why I bought it.
with kids, its fun to share all the digital pics we are taking, and now, theoretically, I can do it outside of the realm of my pc at my desk.

will be interested to see how yours works also.

Something I don't understand about all these media boxes. I, for almost 2 years now, have just run a coaxial digital cablr from my PC to my Receiver. It only cost me the $30 for the 50 foot cable. Why do you need an extra box to interfer with the signal?

Noit trying to be a smart a$$, I just don't understand what you get for the money.

*EDIT* OK, I re-read your post jaymer. If you are moving pix then I guess you will need some sort of interface.

I spent the extra money on this box for one main reason, 1080i connection to my tv. I wasnt really happy with how my pics looked through the tivo. They were ok. I am very impressed with how good they look now through this box. It is a little high end but we all need some of those kind of toys!

i'm at a stage where i have tons of mp3s, AND tons of pics of the kids and our adventures.

I have successfully made DVDs of slideshows with background music, etc.

When we take new photos, GW has to come in here or to the wife's PC and view pics. This will enable us to install this box on the big TV and play a slideshow from there.

Also, I only get to hear my music when i'm at my desk. This will (should) also allow it to function as a jukebox and play stuff off the network. Yes, a PC could do the same thing, but thats what this box is supposed to be (probably is inside) and with a simple interface. Who knows? For $50 its worth a try.
