Ok. h/e, the picture looks a little grainy to me either way. New to HDTV and suprised it is not more impressive. I think that my progressive scan DVD lkooks as good or better than some of the HDTV that I have seen so far. Does this sound right to you?

please tell us what you are using for a HD signal?
are you sure you are using the correct HD inputs?

I have Direct TV and signed up for the HDTV package. I am using the HD discovery channel as my test channel. My receiver is a Samsung SIR-TS360. I ran component video cables straight from the recieiver to the dtv input on the back of my tv. I understand that the receiver displays HD when receiving a HD signal. Do you know if the TV has a similar function?

Thanks.

pretty much everything I've seen on discoveryhd looked beautifull...its all video based hd...I've seen some shows converted to hd from film that were down right grainy looking but most are fine, although in general film based hd will not be quite as "real" looking as video based hd is.

Make sure the component inputs you're using on your tv are hd inputs...some tv's may still have seperate regular and hd capable component inputs on the back.

also, I've noticed HD suffers from the same problem as digital photography in that it tends to look a little noisy or grainy in dark scenes sometimes....thats normal.

i just looked up an owners manual, to see what the back panel looks like on a mits 46.
their "DTV" label is the correct one for you to use for the hi-def inputs - cause its also labeled "480i/480p/1080i"

(am unsure what your title means since you referred to 980i or 680p, neither of which exist)

so, that should be the best picture you'd expect to receive.
you might check the HD receiver and make sure its outputing a 1080i signal - someone else might be able to help more on that - i'm thinking that just because its getting a HD signal in, doesn't necc. mean its outputting a 1080i signal, due to a preference setting.
