well, got the Treo 600 (for the wife), for $349 with only a 1 year contract, and I get the Toshiba 4050 with an INCREDIBLE screen for $149 with 1 yr. as well. no activation fees on either, and was overnighted for free.
this achieved my main goal to not be tied into those guys for more than 1 year... yes, paid a bit for the phones, but not more than others do for the 2 year plan, so hopefully they'll still be worth something on ebay if in a year I switch carriers and get different phones.
am on the $110/month plan for 2000 minutes nationwide, which includes unlimited data and picture mail, and the 2nd line is adds the professional business pack - they have a PC program where you mount a directory on your PC and can access any of those files out on the phone.
the 1st good news is that coverage works inside the house - whew!
will advise as we find out more.

hi john
so you still in love with your treo?
there's so much to read at treocentral - all sorts of goodies out there.
cyndi's taking it today to orlando - catching a braves game - so i'm sure i'll get some msgs from the stadium - too cool!!!
we've always been Yahoo based (as opposed to MSN, AOL, etc.) - so with either phone I can easily get my yahoo mail and use IM, and of course check my English Soccer scores on the weekend.

The new calling plans are up at SprintPCS.com
It looks like they have come down about $5 for the plans, or increased them 100-minutes for the same money. As a long time PCS customer, I'm going to try and negotiate a combined plan for Pat and I, but only if they'll throw in pcs-to-pcs calling so we can talk to each other without burining up double-minutes. I'll ask for the america option as well, since we are in Maine for the summer and don't want to pay extra for roaming off the sprint network. If you have an existing SprinPCS plan, maybe it's time to call and take advantage of the lower rates? Confirm that they won't charge for any plan changes, and also that you won't lose any old plan features like FIMF(first incoming minute free).

Yes - I bought it with the intention of trying it out and it has turned out to be a very powerful work tool.
As with any new technology I adopt, I quickly find its limitations!
The major thing I need to do is figure out how to get tiff docs that are emailed to me (along with a few other docs sprint doesn't allow to be downloaded) to view on the Treo. Right now I'm just using the business connect and that is a big limitation.
You've got to try the reqwireless browser. It uses a beta java so can be a bit unstable at times and has some limitations that Blazer does not BUT it is so much faster that I rarely use Blazer.
Also, I'm going to test the pdanet program that lets you use the treo as a modem.
Keep me up to date on how it works for you!!

i will try the reqbrowser - have not yet.
most of my time on the machine is when in the car and wife is driving, or at a restaurant.
have tried to download files and get the "no application supports this file type" msg - so have to download those from the PC and sync them over, they say.
on those other 2 issues, I can see how you'd need them in your job.
the ability to see a scanned tiff for remote review would be awesome.
haven't tried it or explored such.
and i don't have a laptop, so don't need it for that either.
i DO want to try the VNC program to see what its like getting remote access to a 1024x768 desktop at my client's.

check acid image pro
http://www.red-mercury.com/aipro.html
their viewer can connect to efax services to display a tiff fax - so instead of emailing you the tiff, just send it to the efax service
if you can get the tiffs onto the SD card while still in the office, then you can easily read them with photogather
