Just noticed that baynews nine is on channel 609....not hd but maybe this means they are going to go hd soon?...that would be cool as thats my default channel when nothing else is on (or when I need the news)

I don't think it is even digital. My TV switches to 480i when I change to that channel.

it is...only channels 1 thru 99 are analog, all the rest are digital. Digital doesn't refer to the video format, just the transmission method.
I would love for baynews 9 to go hd with all there cameras...that would be a good hook for them to keep customers...it would make me rethink switching to fios tv service when it becomes available here.

That is not my point, for example, WMOR Channel 632 has zero Hi Def programming but still comes in digital. My converter box stays at whatever passthrough setting I have (i.e. 1080i). The same way 608 stays in full digital even when no HD content is played.
609 is the exact same channel as 9, just stuck in the hi def area. My Hitachi switches to 480i.

channel 09 is an analog signal...609 is a digital signal...it is still 480i though. My point is that since they put it on a digital channel they now have the option of taping all their content with hd cameras and transmitting in 1080i...that was not possible on the analog channel, at least not without using a massive amount of their bandwidth.
the picture is marginally better though since there is no signal degradation with digital like there is with analog on which the picture quality is dependant on good clean wire and solid connections all the way to the viewers tv, as well as signal strength at the tuner. With digital, as long as the signal gets there it will look exactly like it does at the source.

DVD movies are in 480i format and you can sure see a difference between an analog channel on cable compared to a DVD movie. Now a progressive scan DVD player on an HDTV set will be 480p but for all those non HDTV sets with DVD players they are viewing 480i signals. To be more specific I'm not sure if analog is even 480i but that doesn't stop the digital box from upconverting it to 480i.
But in simple terms its like having Bay News 9 in analog and buying a DVD of the same news broadcast.

I wish they would move all thier analog channels into the digital tier. Analog looks like crap on HDTV sets.

I'm pretty sure I'm switching to fios tv when it becomes available - bn9 really doesn't matter to me.

bn9 is really the only thing I think I'll miss when/if I switch to fios....if I can ever get it that is.......the fiber is running down the road about 800 feet from my house and I can't get it, do you know how frustrating that is?
