View Full Version : I gave up on BHN

Well I finaly did it. I gave up on BHN and ESPN-HD. The Miami game last night put me over the edge as I was watching the terrible picture quality from ESPN on BHN, my friend calls me to tell me that his brother in Ft. Myers (Comcast) is watching the game in HD and the banner comes across the bottom of the screen displaying "Availible in HDTV". That is it; I decided to buy a HD Reciver for D*. I refuse to pay the high prices for a new one and I am not eligable for the D* lease Deal. So I went to Ebay.com I found a Mitsubishi HD5 for $365.00, not too bad considering I can sell my old SD box for around $200.00.
But still as I am looking forward to watching all the college and NFL football games that ESPN-HD has to offer this season, I can't help but think I paid alot of money for just one channel.
There is good news though. Since I have already made the investment, BHN is sure to add the channel now that it is too late for me. Well atleast the rest of you can watch the games without dishing out the money I did for the dish.
I guess this is the nature of the HDTV Paradox that we have all come to know since we made the plundge.

Thanks bdraw. I look forward to BHN adding all the rest of the channels to the HD line-up.

BHN will not be adding CBS or ESPNHD to their line up anytime soon. For those of you on the fence...are you going to sign up for D* this week? I know I am...with the limited amount of HD out there, it seems absurd to stick with BHN in hopes that they add channels that they should already carry.

Anyone know the difference between Dish & Direct?
What would the lease deal be if I just got 1 HD setup and the required programming?
I'm thinking of keeping BHN and just getting D* lease for HD & OTA? Any thoughts?

I would probably be looking into switching as well if i didn't have a ota reciever that I can use to watch cbs hd games......I think any bucs games that are being broadcast in hd will be available on one of the local channels and thats the only games I care to watch.

I also thought the same thing but the one thing to take into consideration is that our local CBS affiliate may choose not to show the CBS game of the week in HD and instead show a more local regional game involving Miami or Jacksonville. I can't remember all of the Miami games that CBS aired last year. So in reality, the only way to guarantee receiving the CBS HD game of the week is to subscribe to Sunday Ticket. As for the Fox widescreen games, its logical to think that the reigning Super Bowl Champions would be tops on their list to show in WS. Does anyone have a contact at the local CBS affiliate to see if they are going to broadcast the HD game or a Miami or Jacksonville game instead???

I just purchased the Sony HD200 from Circuit City and will be getting (it's required) a 1 year subscription to DirecTV. Since I am already a BHN subscriber and I am not about to switch to D* only, I will be ordering the DirecTV base package w/o local stations (33.95/month) and I plan to add the $10.99 HD package to that so the total monthly payment will be about $45.00 a month plus tax.
I haven't actually placed the order with D* yet because I have to wait for the installer to put in the Dish.
IMO, I think the Circuit City deal was a pretty good one:
$649.00 minus an additional $50.00 rebate (for new DirecTV customer) = $599.00 + tax for the HD200
This also include a free $80.00 Turk Triple LNB Dish and Free single installation. This deal applies no matter which subscription package you order.
I will of course have to put up the OTA antenna myself.
PS Not being a Sports Nut, I really prefer the BHN station lineup because you get The Movie Channel and more of all of the other premium channels. I am getting the D* subscription just for the HD stuff and the improved overall picture quality on the basic programming channels. I bought the HD200 because I am also excited about the OTA HD stuff. DirecTV, to my way of thinking anyway, just doesn't have enough
programming to completely replace BHN
Oh well, enough rambling...

Thanks Tom,
Good information. Are you planning on putting your OTA antenna on the Terk? Let me know how everything works out for you after everything gets installed.
Thanks again.
