Anybody else buy the DISH Model 921 PVR? If so what do you think? AVS Forum members seem divided on whether it is worth the thousand bucks. Most problems seem to be in OTA recording.

I haven't removed mine from the box yet as I am undecided if I will keep it.

Mike -

I was thinking of getting one as I have DISH...

But with the HD DIRECTIVO - with 2 HD tuners and 2 HD OTA TUNERS - I may make a move.

Its also a TIVO ( which I like the interface ) and its estimated to be 400 bucks less

I still have the 921 in the box. It looks like DISH has acknowledged problems with the 921 (according to the AVS Forum) and has a pretty fast turnaround. One of my concerns is the fact DISH hasn't activated the firewire ports yet.

I am also on the waiting list for the D*** PVR.

I know one of the early beta testers for this box - he said it is coming along - they are up to build 147 of the sw -

from inital beta 05x -

It is coming along well - enough that I have ordered one.

They are replacing one of the boards inside all units not released to fix some issues that will require the inital boxes to go back at some point.

Also it would appear that you will be able to add another HD at some point -

Which is good as I want to be able to store more than 25 hours or so.

Only thing I really want is a 2nd HD OTA tuner

it has 3 tuners - 2 for DBS one for OTA
and you can only record with 2 at a time. Which is logical when you consider you are writing at about 10MB/s for each stream.

This does have 1 advantage over the HDD*TIVO - this has varaible encoding - so that it records at a lower rez for lower rez signals - ie 10M/s is about 4x that of 480p.

I still don't know what to do. Still have the dumb thing in the box. Guys on the AVS forum are saying that DISH is not honoring the Warranty. Others say the reason is that new units are being built with a needed fix.
