Circuit City announced today that they have been unable to find a buyer or arrange new financing, so they will be liquidating and closing all stores. Liquidation sales may begin as early as this Saturday (Jan. 17).

One suggestion if you are thinking about getting a deal with the liquidation prices. Check CC's website or other stores for the regular prices on items you think you might be interested in beforehand. Oftentimes, the liquidator's 20% off, 30% off, etc. prices are based on some inflated regular price so that you are not really getting the deal you think you are. According to the story in the link, the liquidators will provide for 70.5 percent return on merchandise, so realistically, look for no better than a 29.5 percent discount (probably less, since the liquidators need to cover expenses and make a profit).

I'm sorry to see that the recession has put them in the dump. I've bought quite a few things from them over the years. The beginning of the end was when they got rid of all their commissioned sales people. The last time I was there I couldn't find anyone to help me and I had to check out through the service desk.
For the time being, this means that there is one less player to keep BestBuy from charging more for whatever items you are shopping for.
Maybe when the economy picks up another national brand electronics store will expand into this area.

The recession??
They've been on track to go out of business for 6 years now. How they lasted this long is beyond me.

CompUSA bought out GoodGuys then closed down about a year and half ago.
Does this mean I dont have to pay the rest of my Circuit City bill?

Circuit City is back - sort of. Systemax bought the rights to the name and has re-launched Circuit City as an online retailer. Systemmax is the same company that bought up the CompUSA brand name a couple of years ago. They also own TigerDirect.com. As far as I can tell, they have pretty much the same items and prices at any of the three store names.

Not exactly.
I loved the original CompUSA. I still refer people to the new one (I own a computer business servicing computers and make recommendations). But I am not 100% happy with certain aspects of the new stores and they do lack some staples of the consumer and small business computer industry.
For example, they only sell ONE brand of antivirus software (CA) and I think they own it (at least partial stake in the company). I am a big fan of the slim and well received and rated Norton Internet Security 2010 (2009 was good too), yet they do not sell it and lie about it to customers, saying it is an inferior product to CA (hahahahaha). They don't sell any other major brands like McAfee either. They only sell CA. EVERYBODY else has variety. Go into a Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Frys, etc, and you have a choice in antivirus software. Not just the "house brand." This is computer software ladies and gentleman, not wine. Give the consumers a choice.
They also do not carry the Office 2007 Home and Student Edition. Hello, that edition offers Word, Excel, and PP for about $140, and allows 3 computers. The lowest edition they sell is the Basic edition with the same programs, installation on one computer, and a higher price!
While I suggest people buy computers there, I constantly get feedback about salesman telling my customers I am a POS and don't know what I am talking about with Norton and so forth, I suggest they buy the important software elsewhere. Circuit City will turn out the same way, I'm sure.
Oh, and I do miss buying videogames and blurays at CC.

Yeah it's a sad day. Another victim of Walmart most likely. Best Buy as well. Their prices just weren't very competitive.

After the bankruptcy the name and other trademarks were sold off and it is an online retailer now. And what does this have to do with Best Buy? Walmart only carries lower end items and if you knew the products Best Buy carries them and the higher end as well.
