My 52" Sony KDL52V4100 arrived today. After a couple of hours, I am really not impressed. Right now I do not have HD receiver. I will have HD receiver installed next Tuesday.
The picture and sound not as good as my 7-year-old sony wega TV.
Do you think HD receiver will help? and do you have a way to tweak the TV to show better image for regular programming.

Are you tuning in any ota hd channels? Most sd looks like crap compared to hd so yes a hd receiver will help immensely when watching hd channels.
You can and definitely should adjust it through the user menus to make sd stuff look better, most tv's default to picture settings that are way off in one way or another.

What size is your Sony Wega? The bigger the screen is, the worse SD will look on it since you will see all the imperfections of the low resolution. When you go to the TV store the small screens always looked better when comparing SD sets.
Have you tried a DVD using Component... that will give you a 480p signal (or better if you have an upscaling DVD) that should look much better than broadcast 480i.

your SD channels will suck big time, tweaking will not do much...
even if you get the HD box, they will look like crap...
HD will look decent, it all depends on the feed or the carrier, BHN does a decent feed, DirecTV and Verizon Fios are much better
if you still want better SD quality, look for a video scaler, they ar eusualy expensive, but DVDO is coming with a good priced scaler soon (DVDO® EDGE)
