Assume I don't already have a computer (it's kinda slow, and in the other room, anyway).

What is the best way to extract HD files from a set-top box DVR, and then burn them to a blank Blu-ray disc. Can I do this without buying a new laptop?

What hardware and software would you use?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you can copy hd video from the 8300hd without a capture card capable of accepting hd resolutions via component cables, and I have never seen one. It will downconvert the hd and output it from the svideo or composite outputs though and that "should" work with any standard capture card or video card that supports video capture.

Who is your provider? If it's Verizon FiOS and you are using their DVR STB, you can't do it period. Verizon has disabled that capability on their DVR STBs.

My provider is BHN, and the set top box is the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD. I thought the HD files could be copied via its HDMI connector or SATA connector or 1994 connector or 1394 connector or front panel USB connector.

With BHN you can get a SA 3250HD with functional 1394, but only record the broadcast channels.

Hauppauge just announced a component HD capture card for $250.

But what is even easier than that is to get a TiVo HD ($250) with BHN and then you can copy any recording from the TiVo to your PC with TiVoToGo. Then you could burn to a Blu-ray disc.

Thanks, Ben.

That's what I wanted to know!

fyi: the hauppauge will most likely downsample to 480p or not record any premium content that does not have the broadcast flag set.

There is no broadcast flag, it was turned over in court.
There is two schemes that could curb this.

1. Selectable output control on Cable or Sat boxes if used, would downrez any display connected to the component outputs. Rumor has it that DirecTV is about to start using this. Only HDMI devices could get a full res.

2. ICT, Image constraint Token. Could be deployed on HD DVD or Blu-ray discs and in that event, the maximum output resolution would be 540p.

Like I said, neither of these are currenly in use, but with a device like this on the market, it's bound to happen.

i know the stipulation that required devices to read/honor the broadcast flag was overturned, but i thought the flag still existed and most pvr manufacturers were still using it to control recording. i know hauppauge tuner cards won't record certain hd content.

While this might be true, if it is indeed because of the broadcast flag, then I'd report the station to the FCC.

why? a broadcaster can tag their content with whatever data they want. the court ruling stopped the FCC from requiring DVR recorders to honor the flag but did not and cannot bar it from being added to the datastream. so now it's up to the broadcasting industry to get manufacturers to work with them to protect content rather than have the FCC mandate it.

I believe your mistaken, but I am intrigued, do you have any sites you can direct me to with more information?
