My new S3 Tivo is running version 8.0.1c and it seems it needs to update to a newer version before I can use the networking features. I can't find how to do this manually, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, Holly.

You'd probably get a quicker response over on the Tivo Community forums:
http://tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/index.php??

Of course, start by searching the existing threads for an answer.

I gotta say, tho, that's a very new device and firmware. Are you sure it doesn't support networking already? My old Tivo S2 does networking, either hard-wired by Ethernet, or by a USB wireless adapter, as I have.

Good luck,
Jack

Thanks, Jack. I've been searching there for a while with no luck. It seems once you have networking support, you can force a connection, but the networking support doesn't exist until version 9.1. Why is waiting so hard when you have a new toy to play with??

If you don't have the latest verison then you need to keep forcing a tivo connection. If will take some time to upgrade.

Yeah, that wasn't working though. It told me "service not available; software update scheduled for 2am." I was hoping to force it before that.

But, in the end Tivo made the decision for me. It rebooted itself during The Office and started installing an update. Then, it rebooted itself again during the installation. Now, it says it's Preparing the Service Update; This may take up to an hour possibly longer.

So, it'll mess up The Office and Scrubs, but hopefully I'll have current software (and no more rebooting issues!). Please tell me the newest version stops the random rebooting?

The random booting could be caused by one of 4 four things. I doubt it is because of the software.

1. Wireless network
2. Cablecards
3. Bad hard drive
4. Bad TiVO

See http://www.tampahdtv.com/tpahd-vb/showthread.php?t=26941 for the bad hard drive posting that I just went through..

By the way, networking connection via the ethernet was supported with 8.0.1c.. I know becuase I had that verison and only used the ethernet. I still have the original hard drive with the original verison stored away.

Right, the S2 and S3 had different 8.0 versions. At some point they merged the code together, but in the early versions, there are differences.

I believe she is talking about MRV and TTG for which you need at least version 9.1 on S3/THD to work.

Your probably right, I took that comment the wrong way.

So far, no reboots. At least not that I've noticed :) And hopefully it'll stay that way for a nice long time.
