This weekend I decided to modify the way my ReplayTV was connected to my FiOS service.

I have a Panasonic Showstopper (ReplayTV) unit. I have upgraded the drive twice. I think I currently have an 160GB hard drive in it, which gives I think about 300 hrs of SD recording.

I originally had connected the Replay directly to the cable which allowed it to tune in the analog channels that FiOS puts on the line. This is basically channel 1-36 or something, so you basically get the major networks and a few other odds and ends.

I decided to take one of the SD boxes that is in the other room where we mainly only use the TV for Video games and use it for the ReplayTV. I had no idea where the IR blaster was so I picked up a SmartHome IR emitter from Best Buy for $13.

I plugged the IR blaster into the Replay. I put the Moto QIP2500 between the wall outlet and hook the out from the STB to the ReplayTV.

Next I went in an changed the cable system from FIoS to FIoS digital. I change the input settings on the ReplayTV to specify cable box. Choose Motorolla as the brand and IR code 0476 (found this online somewhere). The ReplayTV dialed in, got the expanded channel list and the guide for the next 14 days.

Once it was done the ReplayTV guide showed all the FiOS channels. Nice. When I tuned into a channel the IR blaster set the Moto QIP2500 to the correct channel. It all worked very nicley. I put the STB behind the TV (no more room in the TV cabinet.) and done.

I now use this to record all the shows that I watch that I can't get in HD. Stuff from Sci-Fi like Stargate Atlantis, Eureka, Dr.Who, etc. I also am gonna start recording Good Eats again. This takes some space pressue of the HD DRV too (although I am replacing that with a TivoHD, see other thread). I have had this unit for what will be 6 years this december and it has provided excellent service.

So, if you are looking for an SD DVR that you can own and blows away the FiOS Moto QIP64XX then consider getting a ReplayTV. Yes, you will have to buy it used, but most of them will come with lifetime service already included/attached. Sure, you can get a Series 2 single tuner for free... but you will have to pay the service subscription.

I also from using it remember how great the ReplayTV interface is. It just works like you would expect it to.
