I stopped into Best Buy today, and at the front of the store were two huge stacks of Insignia (Best Buy's store brand) 19" 720p HDTVs. One stack had TV/DVD combos for $399, and the other stack was the TV w/o DVD for $379. It looks like Best Buy is expecting a big run. I have no idea about the quality, but that's the lowest price I've seen for a true HDTV.

I thought true HDTV was 1080i, and 720p was EDTV?
Have they watered down the requirements to sell more TV's?

Actually, 720p is generally better quality than "1081i" and it is cheaper to produce and takes up less bandwidth.

It's definitely cheaper and takes less bandwidth, but it's like comparing a 2MP camera to a .75MP camera in regards to pixels. This is especially true when you have a 1080p TV with a good de-interlacer.
The fact that it uses less bandwidth is the main reason why so many of us were happy when WEDU switched to 720p, cause they have so many sub-channels the reduced bits of 720p reduces the amount of macro-blocking.
Either way 720p is HD.
