I just got an HDTV and I am getting pretty much everything in the market over a $10 RCA antenna I got at walmart, however, Is there any way to find out which programs are in HD on particular channels, in specific WUSF/WEDU? I am noticing that online program guides like yahoo TV and titantv are spotty at best at noting which programs are actually in HD versus being broadcast in upconverted SD. I was watching WEDU last night and it seemed that everything that was playing was upconverted with black bars on all 4 sides. Is there a better/more comprehensive guide online?

TitanTV is about the best, but like you said it's not perfect. My TiVo guide data is pretty good for WEDU, but sometimes for whatever reason shows are still displayed with black bars on all four sides, which I suspect is someone falling asleep at the wheel, so they forget to flip the switch to HD. As for WUSF, they don't do any HD, so that's an easy one.

Has gotten MUCH better.

You need to personalize it, but once you do, for me, it only shows the ota dtv signals I receive.

you'll have to register with yahoo, once you bookmark the listings page, it will always go to the current time on clicking the saved link.

Is my best and most informative guide I have found yet.

They both have extensive websites and you'd probably find their HD info there.

WEDU is an incredible HD channel, when they are showing content in HD.

The heavy hitters like Nature, Frontline, Nova, and American Experience are almost always in HD, unless they are repeating an old program.

What is strange is that you have to watch/record/DVR those shows in primetime, because the late night repeats are in SD windowboxed. Not sure why they do that. That was an issue as of summer 2008, and I am not sure if they have corrected that problem.

Another guide one to try is zap2it.com. They do a pretty good job of informing you of what is available in HD.

If I had to guess I'd say the reason the late night reruns are in SD is because they put the system on auto-pilot and no one is there to hit the HD switch.

Why is there a manual switch? My TV automatically knows if it is getting a 480i, 480p, 720p or 1081i signal and switches automatically. Can't these broadcasters get such simple equipment?

The HD programming comes on another feed (think channel) so they have to switch the feed, and for whatever reason most stations use a manual switcher since someone is already watching. I've called WEDU once and the guy at master control was very nice, he explained some of it to me, but honestly I didn't understand everything he said, but I did understand the part about HD coming in on a different feed then the rest of the programming.
