I was shopping in CompUSA yesterday for a device to connect to my phone line so I wouldn't miss incoming calls while online. It's called "catch-a-call" and it's on clearance, marked down (from $50---to $20). You just connect it to the phone line before the computer, and it rings when a call comes in (if you have call-waiting).
Many of the new V.92 modems have this feature, but getting one for my laptop is more expensive than this device.
I used to reset my modem settings so that the S-register was set to 1 (s10=1 in the extra settings config box), which decreased the allowable carrier-interrupt interval and the call-waiting tone would bump me off line so I could answer the phone. SBC must have done something to their servers, since that trick doesn't work anymore.
