I sent the following message the other day to WFLA's Gayle Sierens and WTVT's John Wilson:

Dear Gayle and John,

Well, ya gotta hand it to Jack Winter and his WFTS crew - a glimse of the future now!

And they have NEVER stretched their picture on their DT channel, even when it is from a low definition source. Everybody always had a natural look.

P.S. to Gale: I switch to the WFLA digital channel at 6:30 PM to enjoy the NBC Nightly News in HD!

Here's Gayle's reply:

We’ll be HD by the end of the month…see you then!!! Gayle

Good to hear but I'm not sure I want to see Gayle in HD. I prefer Wendy Ryan on ABC. Nice on the HD eyes.

Very cool email from Gayle. I'll have to check with the enigneering guys to see if I can get an exact date.

So, I caught the HD version on WFLA, but it didn't fill the width of the screen like other HD channels. However, it was wider than the 4:3 of SD. Is this because WFLA is at 720 and not 1080?

No. If you look closely, you'll see that local WFLA programs and commercials are now hideously stretched horizontally to nearly fill the 16:9 ratio.

Hopefully, going to full HD will get them to stop the crude stretching of most locally-produced programming.

Well, it's almost the end of the month.

Perhaps you will recall Gayle Sierens saying we should watch for local news in HD from WFLA "by the end of the month."

So keep a sharp eye on WFLA-DT....

I am watching and recording WFLA everyday just in case, as I can't get any info out of them.

With WFLA right around the corner and WTVT close too, WTSP has to be feeling the heat, or maybe they won't mind being the only non-HD news broadcast.

Our inside informant, WFLA anchor Gayle Sierens, has just informed me:

"I think it starts the end of this week…Gayle"

LOL. I can't believe that the on-air personality freely gives out info while the management staff is mum on the subject and I can't get a word out of them.

Maybe no one told her to keep it quiet

It is starting to weigh on Gayle, because she has been there a long time and is concerned about how she will look in HD compared to the recently hired fresh faces!

On the other hand, her co-anchor Bob Hite thinks he himself looks fine at any age!
