my 9 yr old Hitachi 50inch has got a problem.
on extremely dark scenes or bright scenes, my picture is wiggling, and/or losing vertical hold. then it will pop back and show some tv and as the scene changes again.... i'm like WHOA, and you're like WHOA and my 2 yr old is pissed off cause this is his TV.
i'd like someone to tell me which component might be bad so i'm not taken to the cleaners by the local tv repair shop. I would guess its some common part not holding voltage after all these years.
any help?

I've got a rptv that needs some repair work too (bad flyback transformer,I think)...if anyone knows a honest, reputable tv repairman in the Brandon area that will come to my home please let me know.

If your TV is freaking on bright scenes, or transition from dark to bright, expect to replace a high-voltage power supply. Guess, of course.
If it is a power supply, the cost might be significant. These are made up of large, relatively expensive components.
I think I would hire a old TV repairmen before I let a young guy at it. There should still be a few around.

Here's a good one...
The 10 year old Zenith 46" RP-TV started freaking out a year ago and was replaced with...what else...a 56" RP-HDTV. So anyway, now I need to toss the beast or fix it and give it to mom. Obviously, $100 to $150 for repair would be reasonable but that's about it.
Main Problem - Only displays black and white images. Oddly enough, the on-screen menus come in nice and colorful. Any guess as to cause? I've tried the cable inputs and composite inputs. I guess I can test the S-video inputs to see if a bad connection, somehow causing a loss of the color signals from the source, is the cause.

I know there is a color decoder circuit that separates the colors for the RGB guns. I guess something has croaked in there. That should not be an expensive fix, but (as usual) I'm guessing.
