I recently bought a Samsung LCD with a built-in ATSC/QAM Tuner. However, I'm not able to see the digital channels above ch. 99.

Does anyone know if we can pick up the digital channels with a QAM Tuner or do we need a Cable Card or STB?

A CableCARD or STB is required to receive the digital channels above 99.

You should however be able to receive the local HD channels. Their frequencies vary by area so you'll have to go through the ones the set found when it scanned. I'm in mid-Pinellas and I know that 613.1 is Fox.

I was surprised to see my parents' new tv w/atsc tuner pick up local HD channels on scan from BHC. Good news, since Dad "won't have a box!"

Yeah, QAM is nice, I just wish BHN wouldn't encrypt all their channels. Sure HBO and the like make sense, but Discovery SD isn't encrypted, so why encrypt Discovery HD?

Probably because BHN get to collect extra money for Discovery HD as part of their HD package.

Actually they don't. Discovery HD as well as TNT HD, A&E HD, MHD and Versus/Golf are all free to anyone who has a HD capable cablebox or CableCARD. (not versus on CableCARD) This is my entire point, if they don't charge extra for the channels, then why encrypt them?

So that you have to use their box which increases their revenues.

But you don't have to use their box either, you can use a CableCARD, which I do, but I suppose you're right you have to pay for the card.

Believe me, I would, but my television doesn't have a cable card slot.
