Has anyone else noticed that CBS started broadcasting non 5.1 material in DD 2.0 again?

I just noticed while watching CSI that they were sending the 2.0 material as 2.0 instead of 5.1.

In case you weren't following this before.

CBS was broadcasting DD5.1 even though only the FL and FR channels had any sound during most of their shows.
Football and other sporting evens had sound through all 5.1 channels but not most of their shows like CSI.

This is great for me because when they send 5.1 on 2.0 shows, my AV receiver can't decode it with Pro-Logic. Now that they are transmitting 2.0 my AV receiver is decoding with Pro-Logic and it sounds great.

Thanks

I love that CBS has so many programs in HD. But the sound mix up really sucks. Obviously the local station can handle 5.1 since we get it for the football games, but why don't we get it for all of the other programming??? I assume its something national maybe, but if thats the case then why do they advertise dolby digital on the shows? I know some HD programming is just 5.0 (no LFE/Sub sound) but CBS is the only one who doesn't have center audio, which sucks b/c all the voice comes through that normally. Would be curious to know why we can't get center channel audio on most of the programming on CBS. Anyone have any ideas on this?

The source matrial has to be masterd in DD5.1 CBS just does not do it.
ABC does all their shows and NBC doesn't do it either.

CBS sports has a Dolby Digital tech on site to do the sporting events. They mix the channels for each event.

But for some reason when CBS does their TV shows they don't produce more than 2 channels.

Personally I like to get it the way it was produced. Gives me the freedom to process the original signal. When the local affiliate converts the 2.0 signal to 5.1 they leave the other 3.1 channels wihout sound. I would rather listen to all my speakers than just 2 of them.

It sucks because it seems hard enough to get these stations to catch up with the latest technology (that some of us have) only to have them taking steps back. I just don't see the difference if the 5.1 encoder/decoder whatever is on or not. I was hearing the 2 channel broadcast just fine with it on and don't get me wrong, I still am. Just don't come crying to this board this weekend when some football game that's supposed to be in 5.1 isn't because some engineer or master control operator forgot to turn it back on.

Maybe the audio is now automated to switch from 2.0 to 5.1 or whatever based on the actual broadcast. Unless some engineer from WTSP lets us in on the situation, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. That's all I'm saying.

I understand what you are saying. I agree I would rather have 24/7 5.1 than non at all.

But if the lazy engineer can't switch it to 5.1 when there is a show on, then I will complain till they get someone who will.

I agree. If I get it in 2 channel, I have the ability to spread that over other channels (i.e., rears).

the change is definetely very much welcome. No I can hear it the right way, DPL or DPLII. From a audio/sound perspective great improvement. :)

Good job,
