Dish is now going to enforce having EVERY receiver hooked up to a phone line or get cancelled. Subscribers are starting to get letters stating such. DirectTV will not be far behind.

What good is that going to do other than to inconvenience people who may not have a phone plug close to their tv?....it won't stop people using hacked access cards cause they don't have service to be turned off to begin with.

All I have to say to DirecTV if I get a letter is you either let me have it the way it is or I will cancel my account of 130 plus dollars per month and and just go without NFL Sunday Ticket for one year until my cable company gets it. Trust me they won't lose a legal paying customer for that kind of money. I promise you that much. Instead of pissing off customers they should upgrade to a two way system. They get everything ass backwords.

I guess they are going to loose me as a customer.
I don't even have a home phone.
I quit paying $40/mo so that telemarketers could call me a long time ago.
They told me I didn't need one as long as I don't order PPV.

No offense to the original poster, but I think he/she should offer up the source of his info. I did a quick Google search and didn't come up with anything.

Doubting Chess Player: Go to www.dbstalk.com and look under dish forum. Two post with many verification replies. "STACKING" is a bigger problem than "HACKING" for both Dish and Direct and they would gladly like to be rid of those with many receivers distributed to all the relatives.

If you mean by stacking, is saying you have two receivers when your second one is really at your friends house.
Then D* alreayd prevents this.
I am only allowed to have one receiver for this reason.
They told me if I wanted a second one I would have to have them both hooked to the same phone line.
That is why I only have one.

yes, bdraw, that is what i'm saying. It is in the contract you sign with either Dish or Direct when getting service that every receiver has to be hooked to your phone line. Those of us who are honest pay for the thieves in higher fees and restrictions whether it be in satTV, insurance or whatever. Now the thieves can start flaming.

You only have to have hooked up to a phone line now if you have more than one. This is nothing new, atleast not for D*.
To me they are the one loosing business. If they would let me have a second reciever without a phone line than I would buy two. But it is chaper for me to have cable and D* than to have a home phone line and a second receiver.
They are only hurting themselves, but not adding the capability to use a broadband connection.
This is also the reason why I own a ReplayTV instead of a Tivo.
Tivo wouldn't give me service without a home phone ReplayTV lets me use my broadband connection.

I had two direct tv recievers before I switched to cable about a year ago and niether one was plugged into the phone jack...they never gave me any trouble with having two recievers because of that?
maybe this is a recent requirement though.

Well, this is one more (big) reason why I don't want a dish. I really really really don't want a phone line connection. I don't know why, but that bothers me (it's why I don't have a TIVO!)
Sorry to doubt you, Dietary Supplement.

E* has never inquired why one of my four receivers is not on a phone line, but I have to point out that a good reason for me to have my receivers hooked up is the very convenient on-screen caller ID. I am not a sat-lover by any stretch, I pay over a hundred dollars a month for E* and don't relish the thought of their new huge superdish with its related expenses. Plus, it causes domestic issues for me constantly. "When you get that new tv we're switching to cable" Wait till I bring up the price of the new 811.............there will be hell to pay at my house................

I have, and pay for, 6 D*** receivers. Only two are connected to a phone line. The only distinction is that I cannot order a special event by remote on the receivers not connected. I wanted to record LOTR in HD on PPV (via 169Time) and had to order online for the RCA adapted receiver. Worked fine.
