The Verizon-inserted commercials are extremely loud - loud enough to frighten the dog - on some channels. The audio compression setting has no effect. My guess is that it is the result of Verizon using a single - high - volume for all commercials regardless of audio feed level which varies between networks

Anybody have a solution other than a mad dash for the remote?

Verizon probably doesn't have the Dolby digital dialog normalization parameter set correctly for their local inserts, resulting in higher than average audio levels. This is a recurring problem with BHN, too.

Complain to Verizon, starting with their tech support / customer service folks. If you don't get an effective response complain up the management chain.

Note that the FCC mandates that DTV broadcasters implement the ATSC standard A/53D which limits locally inserted audio to the average spoken dialog level of the preceding program material; I'm not sure if that standard applies to local cable systems, but it should.
