I noticed that Nov 1st is the date that WUSF 16 is supposed to start transmittiing digital.

Does anyone know if they are on schedule?
Are they going to multicast?
Play the loop, or just show upconverted SD of their normal channel?

Do they have any HD programs that 3 doesn't currently carry?

I was wondering the same thing. I was trying to dream up what the very top could be called, and I thought just simply WINDOW would be cool. What could be clearer than that (maybe VISION).

Anyway, I think 1080p is tops in the ATSC spec.

I figure you know this, but for completeness, the channel they will be on is:
Call Actual Virtual
Letters Channel Channel Network Freq (MHz) Ant. Site Live Date
------- ------- ------- ------- ---------- --------- ----------
WUSF-DT 34 ? PBS 593 (UHF) Riverview May 01 '03

I guess the Live Date was wrong. It might be interesting to occasionally type in 34 to your receiver to see if it pops anthing up. My receiver will allow me to type in the actual channel number (i.e., "24" for digital channel 10) and it will bring it up. I tried 34 two days ago without luck.

it actually gives me great pleasure to know that the braintrust here is spending (wasting) cycles wondering how i'm monkeying with the forum RANKS...

but it WOULD be interesting to know whats going to be broadcast over there.

I do have a contact over at WUSF and have been talking to them regularly. They are not going to make the Nov 1st date but I have been told it would be shortly afterwards. I will be posting some more info when I get it today or tomorrow. Stay Tuned!

Do you know what channel they will be redirecting to?

I would assume they would redirect to 16-1, why be different from everyone else.
I guess it could be 34-1.

They will be redirecting to 16-1. However, regarding the other info I am still awaiting word.

Ok some good news and some bad news..

WUSF is experencing some delays and won't be on-air until Dec 15th. This is due to the contractors scheduling.

WUSF WILL BE MULTICASTING 4 channels at this time. They do not have the funding for the HD equipment. If they did it would only be a duplicate of the PBS Satellite feed anyway and it is pointless to duplicate WEDU at this time.

The channels they are going to MULTICAST is:

1. Simucast of Analog Channel
2. PBS YOU
3. FL Knowledge Network
4. Annenburg/CPB (www.learner.org)

The reason why WUSF will have FL Knowledge Network is because of the funding they received from Tallahassee required the stations to broadcast it.

I have to correct myself as I have been informed that WUSF will not be redirecting their channel to virtual channel 16. They have their reason and at this time I cannot say what it is. If they change their decision and redirect I will try to let you guys know.

Any Questions?

Bryan

Depending on how someone views the info and what it contains, it could be good or bad or both.

Looks 90% like "who cares" for the HD crowd. The only advantage is if they carry programming that WEDU does not. The digital pic, although SD, would be better than anything off cable.

I can't see myself turning to that station ever. I really do like some of the PBS programs, but most of them I have tuned in because of the HD format.

Exactly!,
Why can't we have Nova in HD?

Are there NOVA's recorded in HD? If not, I agree this would be a winner.

Looks like your wish has been granted. PBS HD Schedule (http://www.ptvdigital.org/dt2a_nov.html) indicates that Nova will be in HD on November 28:

NOVA #3017 "Volcano Above the Clouds" (HD)

Called the station today and was told they just applied for an extension with the FCC. They don't expect to be on the air before the spring.

They applied for the extension some time ago.. They are still should be on the air DEC 15th. Look at my update earlier in the thread.

Different strokes for different folks. CH 16 has some interesting programming, ie, Agatha Christie movies and I still howl at the old Jack Benny shows.

Best of all, nothing is worse than the WEDU logo. Talk about an absolute lack of class.

The system integrator missed the schedule date due to other installs and the holidays.

WUSF has re-schdeduled for them to start to finish up the first week of Jan with testing to be done during the middle of Jan with a live date at the end of Jan.

When they inform me of the testing days I will post the info.

Got an email from WUSF. They hope to have the signal going by the end of February/ beginning of March. Just thought I'd post it.

What resolution will USF be running when they are live?

480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i?

WUSF is testing their 4 channels at this time. They are mapping to 16.1 through 16-4.

Today is the day they finally went from test patterns to having programing on all 4 of their channels.

As of 11pm they still have the banners on 1, 2 and 4. I've already contacted them about the banners.
