View Full Version : NO signal in Valrico from CBS - but it's ANALOG is FINE!

I'm stumped. I *used* to get 10-1 (24) CBS at my house, and since the beginning of September I'm now getting a "no signal" from my receiver. All the other hi-def networks are fine, including OTA and DSS. The signal strength meter is flatlined. There's NOTHING there. But click down to regular ole channel 10 and I get a decent signal and picture in analog.
Does anyone have any idea why 10-1 is now not there? I've tried all the re-scanning, manual setups, etc I can think of -- still NO SIGNAL. AT ALL.
Thanks in advanced.

I'm in East Bloomingdale, and noticed the same thing in September.
I had loaned out my Channelmaster 7777 amplifier, and sometime later noticed that I could not get CBS any longer.
But I was SURE that I was getting CBS clear and strong long before I had the amp.
Something changed somewhere - but I couldn't find anyone else who was having the same results.
Am still unsure why this would be - since BHN started carrying CBS, I have not needed OTA for CBS. The next time I'm on OTA (which is usually only Monday for Las Vegas) I'll try and check on CBS.

Are you using a jointenna? Or are you using just one antenna for everything, vhf-uhf combo?

Also, what OTA receiver are you using? I find that my Samsung 160 drops 10-1 off the guide occassionally. Not sure of the technical terms but it has something to do with the embedded information within the digital signal. Of couse, I can usually use direct entry to get it or just re-add it to my guide. I'm over in St. Pete and have been getting 10-1 at 100% consistantly.

I'm using a Terk outdoor antenna -- those ones touted especially for Digital broadcasts. It Used to come in fine. Now there's zip. How do you tune it manually? I can only really just re-scan. I can try typing in "24" to see if it gets anything...I'll look into that.
The receiver is one of the newer Zenith models...the HD-SAT520.
any advice would be appreciated. In the meantime I'll try manually tuning while I watch for posts. At least I know SOMEONE is getting it now.

in my case (last time I checked), its a CM YAGI at 28ft. rotated directly toward them - and I only get about 35% - not enough for a locked signal.
Installed the Radio Shack U75 antenna yesterday and picks up all the digital signals in Riverview great even WB38. I also can pick up a great analog signal off the backside of this antenna for channel 10 in Holiday. My understanding was that the digital signal for 10 is broadcast on UHF so if I can pick up their analog signal shouldn't I be able to pick up the digital?
This antenna replaced the Stealthtenna which could only pick up 3 digital signals and not 10 at all either. I live close to the interesection of Erlich road and Huchison in NW Hillsborough. Is there a problem with 10 digital now or do I need an antenna pointed at Holiday also. Other posts seem to indicate they can pick up 10 off the backside of there antenna in my area.
Thanks for the help

Ten can be funky for me too, in Carrollwood. Usually I can pick it up from the backside of my stealthtenna but lately I think I will have to reinstall my RS yagi toward Holiday. Seems like it goes out only on Sundays when I want to watch football, of course.

From an antenna's perspective, the "Digital Broadcasts" are no different than the same old analog broadcasts. This "digital" thing on the antenna box is a little bit of marketing BS. In fact, the digital stations are mostly put in the old UHF slots, so any UHF antenna is perfectly OK. There a few digital stations locally in VHF slots, so a combined VHF/UHF is good, but not necessary.

This is very odd. I pick up 10 on the backside of my Silver Sensor in Ybor, and then it goes through 2 splitters, no amp, and to two tunners.
Out of all my stations, the two I never have problems with is 10 and 28
I get 100% on a Mit HD5
There must be other factors.

Channel 10 is in the UHF channel 24 frequency slot, up around 533MHz. I don't know what kind of antenna the U75 is, so I cannot comment on its usefullness. However, I can say that the bigger antennas are better than smaller (especially for VHF stations), and the height of the antenna is BY FAR the most important factor in receiving stations.

The analog channel is a COMPLETELY SEPARATE CHANNEL (195MHz). Note that when we say "channel", what we are really saying is "what frequency was the station received on". The reason that the DIGITAL channel 10 can be broadcast on the channel 24 frequency is due to a special trick that digital broadcasts play. Here's the trick:
The digital data contained in these broadcasts contain some special non-video data (the "PSIP"data). This data can contain the name of the program and stuff like that. Also, there is a "channel redirector" code that allows your receiver to display a fake channel number. Your HD receiver would just display "24" without this redirector, but with the redirector the receiver shows "10". The reason for this little subterfuge is that it is convenient to see the same number for analog and digital stations. In the list of stations above, this redirector code is shown in the Virtual Channel column.
The U75 antenna I referred to was the U75R UHF only antenna, Radio Shack catalog # 15-2160 rated at range up to 75 miles over flat terrain. It's on top of my roof about 25 feet off the ground. I'm going to try and turn it tomorrow and point it at Holiday to see if I can receive digital 10 then. If this works I will buy another of this antenna and aim one to Holiday and one to Riverview which should allow me to receive everything. Only question is how to join the two together. Can I just get a splitter to join the two antennas and then run the single downlead to my Samsung TS 160 or will it be more complicated than that? Thanks for all your help again.

combine it with a Jointenna - see the Review in the Review Section of this website

But you have to combine it with a "special" Jointenna, one that is for Channel 24. It can be picked up at Dow Electronics for 24.95.
Thanks for all your help. Ordered the Jointenna last Thurs. and received it on Fri. Hooked it up Sat. with another UHF antenna pointed to Holiday and I now receive everything with no dropouts. Nice to have a local site for this sort of info.

RMagruder,
Are you still having problems picking up 24?
