For any of you newsgroup junkies out there, I recently heard that BrightHouse has stopped their own internal news servers, and has repointed all their news server DNS listings over to NewsHosting's servers.

Currently, I get 4 concurrent connections to "RoadRunners" servers at the full speed of my connection (usually in the 800+kbps range) with retention of over 45 days. I'm going to be cancelling my GigaNews account when it expires at the end of this month.

I noticed that IP address for the server changed back in December. I also noticed a huge increase in articles (yeah!), but my speed went drom 800K/s to about 300K/s (boo!).

I didn't know they increased the concurrent connections... Will have to try that out tomorrow.

Ouch! One of the secondary reasons for my switch to Verizon DSL was Verizon's NNTP article retention times. Had I known of this BHN change I would have reconsidered the switch. A shame really.

I have noticed at times that my speed on binary downloading drops into the 400-500kpbs range, but most of the time for me, it's up at the full speed of my connection.

Yeah BrightHouse for finally getting a real newsserver service!

BHN news service still doesn't have one of my favorite groups.
alt.binaries.hdtv which happens to have the Serenity HD DVD on it right now.

Stupid question - would this apply to Earthlink's news feed as well?

I'm able to get to that group. Took ages first time I used it to download all the headers though.

Just noticed I cannot find the group using outlook express, but in NewsLeecher it shows up no problem.

Nevermind I tried a different reader and it finds it, not sure what is wrong with that other one.
