Verizon has one-upped Bright House Networks again.
First, it was for making the decision to carry the NFL Network and its eight-game NFL schedule of live games. Verizon FiOS, DirecTV and Dish Network were the only local carriers of the Thanksgiving game between the Broncos and Chiefs.
Now, the NFL has announced live webcasts of the NFL Network's Thursday and Saturday night games will be offered to Verizon's FiOS and DirecTV subscribers, the first time live NFL games will be carried over the Internet in North America.
To make sure the broadband test won't affect TV viewing, the simulcast will only be available to FiOS customers who also have Verizon broadband as well as Verizon broadband customers who have DirecTV. The first webcast is scheduled for the Dec. 7 Steelers-Browns game.
Also, despite airing NFL Network programming, Knology Cable in Pinellas County doesn't air the live NFL game broadcasts.
Knology carried the network before the games were added and chose not to pay the additional fee for the game rights. Cable systems that carried the NFL Network prior to the announcement of the eight-game schedule were given a choice. An NFL Network spokesman said Knology was the only cable operator not to add the games.
