Verizon has pulled the plug on Microsoft developing the FiOS set top box TV software over concerns Microsoft would miss deadlines. Verizon made the choice to handle the software development itself, and deployed its own developers in Texas and India to complete the software.
One problem with Microsoft's development was that the program guide required more memory than was available in the Motorola set top boxes designed for Verizon. Microsoft had also fallen behind on their schedule. Verizon has now met its deadline which it considered important for gaining momentum in the highly competitive TV market.
This does not mean Verizon and Microsoft have fallen out. The two companies continue to work together and Verizon will continue to use Microsoft's Fountain Edition. Verizon are also considering Microsoft's IPTV platform when its FiOS service switches from FR delivery to IPTV.
