View Full Version : Problem with cable modem?

I have a Scientific Atlanta WebStar cable modem on Road Runner service. I have a Netgear WGR6144v5 Wireless router. Every so often, I'll lose my internet connectivity. All wired and wireless ports are affected. I can get back connectivity by going into the router configuration and releasing and renewing the IP address.
The router firmware is current, and I've tried all suggestions I could find in the Netgear support knowledgebase and forums.
I'm wondering whether there is something the cable modem is doing that the router is unable to respond to, like automatically renewing the IP? Anyone have any knowledge or ideas on this?
Thanks,
Jack

Maybe you should try without the router for awile and see what happens?
good luck

Millerman101 - Yeah, that'd be a smart thing to do I agree. However, I have TWF to consider (The Wife Factor). It has taken anywhere from a day to almost a week for the problem to occur. If I remove the router from the network, leaving only MY computer attached to the cable modem, the wife would get seriously annoyed having no internet connection from HER computer! Oh, well, I may have to do this anyway to isolate the source of the problem.

Same modem here however I use a D-Link router. I've had the same problem every now and then. Last time was... you guessed it, early Monday morning... also the 1st day of the month.... and my IP address changed. I'm wondering if it's all related. Take the router out of the system and it works fine. However in this day and age routers in homes are becoming common. Whatever is happening in their system, I'd like to see it corrected or at least looked into.

Might be interesting to see if your outages show up here:
http://www.tampabay.rr.com/NetworkStatus/index.cfm
There are times planned for maintenance listed towards the bottom of the page. Of course, if your connection is down, it's a bit hard to check (unless ya have the RR dialup configured as a fallback or on a laptop somewhere) but at least it would explain it.
Myself, I use this as my home page. I hardly need whatever crap MSN or Yahoo are advertising, while a quick glance to see if mail is down can be useful.
