28-2 SD is up

I got up this morning to find that they have a color-bar test pattern up. Is there really a need for an SD digital signal like ch 8-2? Are some new TVs coming out that have a digital tuner included that only have an SD screen, or what?

If it's one of those new/weather sub-channels that take up very little bandwidth then I think it would be ok but an SD simulcast is a useless waste.

I don't think it will be a weather sub channel. Here is an email I received from my contact at ABC regarding this new sub-channel and what it will be:

Not at this point. For competitive reasons I can't discuss it. I will say
there are still a couple of options. I will make sure the bit rate of the
new channel is held in reserve. Right now it is running at 3Mb with the
main at 15Mb. We recently did a major upgrade to our encoder. One of the improvements was a new compressor board re-engineered with a new chip set. The artifacts were noticeably reduced with this new board.
