During the storms yesterday the power went out on my street. I used the outage as an opportunity to test the battery backup on my fios system that is supposed to give me 4-12hrs of phone service. No luck, and when the power returned an hour later I still had no fios service, neither internet or phone service was working, so I called for a service call.
They had to replace my power supply and my wireless modem, and I've found out that a nearby lightning hit took out my desktops' network card function, my airbed control system, my bedroom TV, and who knows what else will turn up broken. My nextdoor neighbor had his whole fios system replaced today.
I'm on my fourth ONT, and my third battery backup unit, so I guess you could say I've been unlucky with fios reliability. I expected the system to be a bit more surge resistant, being fiber, but my experience shows that that isn't the case with the wired components of the system. I've got the fios system power supply connected to the same outlet as my lawn sprinkler controller with it's network of wires around the property, so maybe that would be a good thing to change. Fortunately, none of these repairs have cost me anything.
